Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab.
Here's what happened.
I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!
The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'
And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally.
You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did.
So this was it: The 'Law of the Garbage Truck.' I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, 'I'm not going to do it anymore.' I began to see garbage trucks. I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my Taxi Driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.
One of my favorite football players of all time, Walter Payton, did this every day on the football field. He would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground after being tackled. He never dwelled on a hit. Payton was ready to make the next play his best.
Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Teachers and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?
Here's my bet.
You'll be happier.
So.. Love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. Believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance , TAKE IT! If it changes your life , LET IT! Nobody said it would be easy... They just promised it would be worth it!

Imagine you’re in Airport. While you’re waiting for your flight, you notice a shop selling cookies. You buy a box, put them in your traveling bag and then you patiently search for an available seat so you can sit down and enjoy your cookies.
Finally you find a seat next to a gentleman. You reach down into your traveling bag and pull out your box of cookies. As you do so, you notice that the gentleman starts watching you deeply. He stares as you open the box and his eyes follow your hand as you pick up the cookie and bring it to your mouth.
Just then he reaches over and takes one of your cookies from the box, and eats it! You’re more than a little surprised at this. Actually, you’re at a loss for words. Not only does he take one cookie, but he alternates with you. For every one cookie you take, he takes one.
Now, what’s your immediate impression of this guy? Crazy? Greedy? He’s got some nerve?! Can you imagine the words you might use to describe this man to your associates back at the office?
Meanwhile, you both continue eating the cookies until there’s just one left. To your surprise, the man reaches over and takes it. But then he does something unexpected. He breaks it in half, and gives half to you. After he’s finished with his half he gets up, and without a word, he leaves.
You think to yourself, "Do this really happen?" You’re left sitting there surprised and still hungry. So you go back to the shop and buy another box of cookies.
You then return to your seat and begin opening your new box of cookies when you glance down into your traveling bag. Sitting there in your bag is your original box of cookies -- still unopened.
Only then do you realize that when you reached down earlier, you had reached into the other man’s bag, and grabbed his box of cookies by mistake.
Now what do you think of the man? Kind? Understanding?
You've just experienced a profound paradigm shift. You’re seeing things from a new point of view.
Is it time to change your point of view?
Now, think of this story as it relates to your business. Perhaps you've been doing something the same way for years, but never stopped to think about how it could be done better. A little bit of research and brainstorming may make you see what you’re currently doing in a whole new way. It will help you to come out of the today’s messy situation of economic gloom.
Seeing things from a new point of view can be very helpful. Possibly, you've been annoyed at one particular client who may have complained about some aspect of your service, but when you actually take the time to understand his frustration and his point of view, you may suddenly experience an entirely different perspective.
After all, he may have just helped you to avoid problems with future customers.
Think outside the box. Be open to suggestions. Be open to changing your point of view. Things may not be what they seem.
This is the time to take action on mistake which we have done and work on that to overcome over the current situation.

Water is more powerful than rock. Water flows and adapts to its surroundings while retaining its power. Given enough friction, solid rock can turn into a sand pile.
To choke back your resistance to change.
- Adjust your attitude. Be flexible. Focus on solutions
- Learn continuously. You'll keep your brain sharp and stay ahead of the curve.
- Pay attention to trends. Spot them first and adjust your plan before you're forced to
- Nurture support systems. Change is smoothed with a little help from your friends
Tip - If you're experiencing change in one area of your life, reduce changes in other areas of your life. Don't change jobs, mates, locations at the same time. Routines are your friends when you're in the midst of change.
2) TAKE RISK:
Life is all about taking risks. And you willingly take chances every day. Whether you drive, take public transportation, or walk to work, you are risking getting into an accident. But you go ahead and do it anyway. What separates achievers from ordinary folks is their willingness to take optional as well as necessary risks.
3) MAKE MISTAKES:
Just think of what you can learn from your mistakes. What steps did you take to make the mistake and how do you avoid repeating the same mistake in the future. If you think about it, that's what you do when you learn something new. You take some action or perform a technique. You get a result.
- If it's the result you want, you make sure that you do it that way every time .
- If it isn't the result you want, then you stop, figure out what you did that wasn't quite right, adjust and try again.
- When you make a mistake, go with it. Admit you blew it, look to see why, take action to fix it, learn and move on. Don't be afraid of making mistakes!
4) LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY:
Most of us have one or two areas of knowledge that we strive to know very well — things related to our jobs, of course, and maybe a hobby or two. While it's important to develop a deep understanding of the things that matter most to us, it is just as important to develop a broad understanding of the world in general. There is, after all, a reason the term "well-read" is a compliment.
5) SET GOALS:
The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you from your course. Properly-set goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of setting and achieving goals, you'll find that your self-confidence builds fast.
6) ASK FOR CRITICISM: Asking for criticism will help you understand the areas that you need to work on to improve yourself. A few pointers on how to deal with criticism:
- Accept that you are not perfect. Double check your work
- Listen carefully. Don't take it personally
- Don't hold a grudge. Clear the air.
Use the six keys and remember the people that are there to help you!

A good man after his death was given a choice to reside in Hell or Heaven.. He requested for a permission to visit both before deciding. He first went to hell .
Contrary to his expectation, hell looked to be a rich place. He went to the lunch room and he saw the delicious dishes being served.
However he was surprised to see that the residents looked famished and ill and were not eating. He realized that they had no elbow joints so could not bend their arms and feed. So all they could do is to look at the food and fight
He quickly wanted to visit heaven. When he entered heaven he found out residents having similar deformity - no elbow joint. He was shocked , expecting that they will also face the same predicament as the hell’s residence
But to his pleasant surprise they were happy joking and looked well fed . He moved to the dinner room and then he saw the most beautiful sight. The residents as they could not bend their hands were feeding each other with the straightened arms.
MUTUAL HELP
Why we cannot follow the doctrine of mutual help in our own life?
Why are we always selfish in our behaviour?
Are we sensitive to other’s needs?
We always think of I, me , myself ……?
Live in the Present
Once a clock master was repairing a clock.
The pendulum requested the clock master to be relieved of it’s duty of ticking. It said “ I am exhausted ticking every second, 60 times a minutes 3600 times an hour , 86400 times every day and 31536000 times in an year. I cannot do more, I can't continue….”
The click master replied “do not think for the future just tick one second a day and you will enjoy it to the rest of your life.”
The pendulum decided to follow the advice and is still ticking happily.
The present moment is never unbearable if we live it fully.
We most of the time swing from past to present to future and are always unhappy.
What holds us living in present ??
How to see , feel here, now…?
Think about the present , live the current moment, current hour , current day, current week….?
God Help
A disciple visited the saint and left his horse untied outside. He bowed to the saint saying that he has full faith in God and have left his horse untied with the belief that God will protect his interest.
The saint replied , “go tie your horse you fool. God will not bother to do such thing which you are perfectly capable of doing.”
Be Accountable of your Actions
Do not depend on God what you can do on your own.
We blame our destiny, external circumstances to cover up our lack of efforts
We should be accountable for our actions.
